FKA TWIGS – EP 2 (Papi Pacify)

“FKA TWIGS”

The name alone peeked my interest. What first appeared to be just “another” music channel soon became an entree into the discovery of charismatic, lullaby like vocals. An unusual vocal range immediately engaged me.

I was compelled to listen, almost in a trance like state, altered realism. This EP commands & demands to be heard.

My first impression of this artists vocal range, through a song, ‘Papi Pacify’ offered distinctive influences of ‘Frozen’ by Madonna with overtones of sounds from James Blake to Lykke Li. While there were similarities, her artwork connected with me on a spiritual level. Her harmony abilities and voice were used to synchronise her very own unique tones, in a way that no one could ever duplicate them, producing relaxing, sexy and ‘pacifying’ imitations.

FKA Twigs articulates a diverse & almost “enigmatic” experience throughout the song “Papi Pacify”. The song offers the listener the ability to enter into a dreamlike space, with just enough fragments of reality to keep you wanting more. Her uncertainty in parts is almost tangible, as an intense build-up is created and ready to be delivered, you are left feeling winded as you’ve been teased by a lighter melody. It’s not till a heavy, bold beat is exposed, that you discover you have unwittingly, passed in to a greater existence and that feeling of “breathlessness” was well worth the wait.

I’m astounded how undervalued FKA TWIGS is as an artist; while dormant to perhaps many, I anticipate she will quickly be recognised and appreciated for a truly inspiring art piece.

If you allow yourself to open up to this song and fall in love, you will discover, as I did, another spectrum of freedom within music.

 Summarised for collarts
